The Blogger Pose

I think Kirsten Dunst has been reading a few too many fashion blogs. Case in point: her modeling stint for Boy by Band of Outsiders. Note the way she stares down at her feet, the awkward hand in her hair and the pigeon-toed stance. I can think of many bloggers (including myself) who have pulled off similar poses. Seeing someone outside of the blogosphere attempt it makes it look rather silly. Is awkwardness in front of a camera the new cool way to model these days?

Hmm, that is weird. I had noticed that she looked pretty awkward, but I didn't make the connection with bloggers. I think it works for bloggers, but partly because they aren't expected to be professional models. I don't think it's the best way to sell the clothes.

Personally I think it's a reference to fashion blogs. Intentional.

I like it! The bloggers are the new trendscouts and thats the right way for fashion to be trendy!

ha, possibly someone is telling her to stand like that. I do like the clothes though.

haha, so true! kirsten can only face the camera head-on when she has the sunglasses on, so we can't see the fear in her eyes ;)

that is quite true, I think thats what makes it look pretty good and unusual. Also I'm updating my link list and was wondering if you'd like to exchange links?!

Great post! It totally captures the fashion posing of the blogosphere. No offense, because I loove all of you style bloggies out there :), but...well,strike a good pose! The key to a good pose is to exaggerate and accentuate the juxtoposition between the shoulders and hips. Its the first thing that they teach you in a fashion illustration course, and gives the model and the clothing so much more panache! Really, it'll look a lot better, and more flattering if you do!

by the way, I love your blog...and you have really nice different poses! :P ...would you like to link swap?

I haven't been past for a while and it looks like I've missed so many great outfits!
I think this post is genius and something I may not have realised until you've taken it out of context and presented it to us.
Makes you realise how silly we look sometimes!

That's so true, I would have never noticed those poses if I didn't frequent fashion blogs so often :P. I myself have also pulled off those awkward looking poses haha.

It could also be that it's not so much Kirsten as it is the shoot's stylist who took inspiration from blogger poses. That said, she does look awkward.

Apparently I'm the only one that finds this post ridiculous. While I certainly see the similarities and trends in fashion-blog poses, I think your statement 'Seeing someone outside of the blogosphere attempt it makes it look rather silly.' is HORRIFYING. Like claiming ownership to the way someone stands in photos is normal. And I'm not talking personal ownership here, but ownership on behalf of a group of people.

I can't decide if this is arrogance or what, but my mom has Polaroids of her and her sisters modeling clothes that they made back in the 70s, and they're all posing like this.

As for Kirsten herself, while models usually have some input or add their own flair to things, this would have most likely been a conscious decision by the stylist.

Something about your phrasing just smacks of something icky.

I was attempting to make note of how strange it is that someone up high is paying meticulous attention to the doings of bloggers.

I'm not claiming ownership to anything, but it's clearly a reference to the look of blogs at the moment.

And it does look silly. But not in a bad way.
